What is Acquired Brain Injury?
An acquired brain injury occurs after birth and can result from various causes, including traumatic injuries, tumours, strokes, infections, or haemorrhages. These injuries can cause a wide range of symptoms, depending on the location and severity of the damage.
Common Causes and Symptoms
Our care assistants have extensive experience supporting individuals of all ages with acquired brain injuries, whether caused by falls, road accidents, assaults, or sporting incidents. Symptoms can range from mild to severe depending on the injury:
- Mild Brain Injury: Symptoms include concussion, dizziness, headaches, memory problems, mood changes, sensitivity to light or sound, and brief periods of unconsciousness.
- Moderate to Severe Brain Injury: More severe symptoms include confusion, agitation, slurred speech, convulsions, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting, and loss of control over bodily functions.
Brain injuries can also lead to emotional difficulties, such as depression, anxiety, and emotional outbursts, which may not align with the situation and can be challenging for families to manage.
Regaining Independence and Wellness
At Homecare Nigeria, we believe that individuals with acquired brain injuries have the potential to regain or develop new skills, a process known as reablement. Our experienced care assistants provide personalised support to help individuals regain independence and achieve fulfilment in their lives.
